Video Poker Online

OBJECTIVE
Video Poker is played basically in the same manner as a hand of poker, with the exception of opponents. A player does not have a competitor in which to beat, rather they must complete a hand that ranks high enough to win a prize.

VIDEO POKER GAMEPLAY
The player will first place a wager, usually between 1 and 5 coins, with 5 coins being the maximum bet. The Video Poker machine will be labeled as to the denomination of each coin to be entered. Note that by choosing to 'Bet Max', the player will typically receive a higher payout percentage for a win than when betting a lower amount of coins per hand. See the Video Poker Pay Table for this information before play begins.

Once the wager has been made, a player will press the Deal button. This will reveal a hand of 5 cards. There will be a Discard button below each card displayed. For any card the player wishes NOT to keep, they will press the Discard button directly below the card. Be sure not to confuse this button as a Hold option, as the cards chosen will be lost. After choosing which cards to Discard, press the Draw button. This will deal new cards in place of the Discarded ones. This is the player's final hand. If a winning combination is displayed, the player will win - if not, the player has lost.

VIDEO POKER PAY TABLE
The Pay Table, located directly on the machine, will show exactly how much a player can win for each combination. In most cases, (as mentioned above), choosing to 'Bet Max' will produce the highest payout rate. For example, if a Royal Flush pays 2,000x for a bet of 1 to 4 coins, it may pay 2,500x for a maximum bet of 5 coins. To make the most of this, if you'd like to spend $1 to $2 per hand, do not choose a $1 Video Poker game. Instead, choose a $.25 Video Poker game and bet the maximum of $1.25 per hand.

VIDEO POKER GAME TYPES & PAY TABLE VARIABLES
Most Video Poker Machines will start the Pay Table with a Pair being the lowest possible winning combination, however many of these begin with a lowest possible winning pair. For example, 'Jacks or Better Video Poker' only engages a win if the player receives a Pair of Jacks, or something better - a Pair of 10's would not be a winning combination. Some Video Poker games that implement wild cards, such as Deuces Wild and Joker Poker, may require an even higher hand to start the Pay Table.

VIDEO POKER CARD RANKS
Cards are ranked from highest to lowest in the following order:

Ace - King - Queen - Jack - 10 - 9 - 8 - 7 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - Ace.

Note that the Ace is listed twice as it can be counted as the highest or lowest (1) card in all Straights.

VIDEO POKER HAND RANKS
Below is a list of all possible winning combination in order from highest to lowest, followed by the typical payout rate for the combination. Note that payout rates may vary by machine and 'bet max' options.

ROYAL FLUSH
Payout = 2,000 points
An Ace-high Straight with all cards of the same suit.
Example: Ace of Diamonds, King of Diamonds, Queen of Diamonds, Jack of Diamonds, 10 of Diamonds.

STRAIGHT FLUSH
Payout = 250 points
Any Straight with all cards of the same suit.
Example: 3 of Diamonds, 4 of Diamonds, 5 of Diamonds, 6 of Diamonds, 7 of Diamonds.

FOUR OF A KIND
Payout = 125 points
Four matching cards of the same value. (by matching, I mean 4 Jacks or 4 Kings, not just 4 face cards)
Example: J-J-J-J

FULL HOUSE
Payout = 40 points
Three matching cards of the same value plus two matching cards of the same value (three of a kind and a pair).
Example: 4-4-4-8-8

FLUSH
Payout = 25 points
All cards of the same suit.
Example: 3-7-8-Q-A, all Diamonds

STRAIGHT
Payout = 20 points
All cards in consecutive order.
Example: A-2-3-4-5

THREE OF A KIND
Payout = 15 points
Three matching cards of the same value.
Example: K-K-K

TWO PAIR
Payout = 10 points
Two matching cards of the same value, plus another two matching cards of the same value. (obviously not the same two pairs, equalling Four of a Kind)
Example: A-A-5-5

PAIR
Payout = 5 points
Two matching cards of the same value.
Example: Q-Q

THINGS TO CONSIDER
Note that the Hand Ranks above show payouts in 'points'. Video Poker games cost points to play. The amount of the wager is equal to 5 points. Therefore, by receiving a winning combination of a Pair, you are not actually winning anything, but rather breaking even.

Always check the Pay Table on a Video Poker game before playing as it greatly effects the payout percentage of the machine. Obviously the "Tens or Better Video Poker" game is going to have a slightly higher payout percentage than a "Jacks or Better Video Poker" game, unless the payout per winning combination is higher on the second machine, or if wild cards are implemented.
