Texas Holdem Rules

This article is intended to teach poker enthusiasts how to play Texas Holdem poker. Texas Holdem is relatively simple game to learn, but can take some time to master the skill of tight aggressive playing style.

Let's start off with a few general terms you'll need to understand, then we'll cover more in-depth Texas Holdem Rules and the order of play.

General Terms in Texas Holdem

Dealer Button: This is a white button placed in front of the player who is assuming the part of dealer. When playing casino Texas Holdem Poker,whether online or in a brick and mortar casino or poker room, the house will provide a table dealer. The placement of this button determines the last player in a hand of Texas Holdem Poker.

Small Blind: The small blind is a forced bet made by the player directly left of the dealer button. The amount of the small blind bet is generally half of the table limit. For example, in a fixed limit game of $10/$20 Texas Holdem, the small blind would be $5. In tournament style Texas Holdem, there will be blind rounds where the blinds generally double every decided amount of time.

Big Blind: The big blind is a forced bet made by the player directly left of the small blind. The amount of the big blind bet is generally twice that of the small blind, equal to the minimum table limit. For example, in a fixed limit game of $10/$20 Texas Hold'em, the big blind would be $10.

Betting Structure

Texas Holdem poker consists of 4 betting rounds. Below is a list of betting options that will be available to you during a hand of Texas Holdem poker.

Bet: To place a wager by adding chips to the pot.

Call: To place a wager equal to that of the previous bet.

Raise: To place a wager higher than that of the previous bet.

Check: To decline placing a wager, but still participate in the current hand. This may only be done when no player has placed a wager before you in the current betting round.

All In: To wager all of one's remaining chips. A player who goes "all in" may only win an amount from each other player that is equal to the amount he has wagered.

Fold: To turn in one's cards to the dealer, opting out of the current hand and forfeiting all chips he/she may have already placed into the pot.

How to Play Texas Holdem

Texas Holdem Poker is a popular card game in which up to 10 players may participate. Each player will receive a total of 7 cards - 2 of their own, face down - and 5 placed in the center of the table, called "community cards". Each player will use the two cards in their hand, combined with the 5 community cards to make the best possible 5-card poker hand.

Texas Holdem Rules - Order of Play

Dealer Button will be placed in front of the player who assumes dealer position. Remember that when you are playing Texas Holdem Poker, whether online or in a brick and mortar casino or poker room, the house will provide a table dealer. This helps the dealer in remembering which players are in the blind and where to start the dealing.

Blind Bets are placed; small blind and big blind, respectively by the two players directly left of the dealer button.

2 Cards Are Dealt face down to each player, beginning with the small blind bettor.

1st Round of Betting begins with the player directly left of the blind bet, who must at least call the blind bet. If no raises are made prior, the small blind and big blind bettors will have the option to raise. If a raise is declined, betting will end with the dealer button.

The Flop is placed in the center of the table, consisting of 3 community cards.

2nd Round of Betting begins, starting with the small blind bettor.

The Turn is placed in the center of the table, insisting of one more community card, totaling 4 community cards.

3rd Round of Betting begins, starting with the small blind bettor.

The River is placed in the center of the table, consisting of a final community card, totaling now 5 community cards.

Final Round of Betting begins, starting with the small blind bettor.

The Showdown begins! Each player will reveal their cards. By combining the 2 cards in a players hand with the 5 community cards, the player with the strongest 5-card poker hand is declared the winner and awarded the pot.
