Razz Poker Rules

This article covers detailed Razz Rules, intended to help poker players learn how to play Razz. A game of Razz may include 2 to 8 players. Razz is played exactly the same as Seven Card Stud except the lowest hand wins, not the highest. For players familiar with 7 Card Stud, learning how to play Razz will be a cinch!

Object of the Game

Each player receives 7 cards - 3 face down, 4 face up - with which to create the best hand - or worst hand, as the case may be. The lowest or weakest hand will win the pot. Aces are considered 1's, therefore the lowest possible card. Straights and flushes do not count as combinations.

The lowest and best possible Razz hand is: A-2-3-4-5

Forced Bets

Ante: Each player must "Ante Up" before any cards are dealt. The Ante is most often 1/5 of the table's minimum limit. For example, in a $5/$10 Fixed Limit game of Razz, the Ante would be $1. This is not actually a bet, therefore does not count towards any wagers placed throughout the hand, unlike Texas Holdem where the blind bets count towards the first round of betting.

Bring In: Once the initial cards are dealt, 2 face down and 1 face up, the player with the highest face up card must "bring in". This means he must place a wager equal to the minimum table limit. If two players have the same highest card, the player closest to the left of the dealer must "bring n". Wagering will continue clockwise around the table. If no player raises, the "bring in" player will not need to place any more chips into the pot.

Table Limits: The betting limit at a table determines the amount of each bet. In a $5/$10 fixed limit game of Razz, players must wager the lower limit ($5) in each of the first two betting rounds. Players must wager an amount equal to the high limit ($10) in the last 3 betting rounds. In No Limit, a player may wager in amount they wish according to their remaining chips after the first 2 betting rounds. In Pot Limit, after the first two betting rounds, players may place a wager that is no higher than the current size of the pot.

Betting Structure

Razz poker consists of 5 betting rounds. Below is a list all possible betting options. Bet: To make a wager by adding chips to the pot.

Call: To make a wager that is equal to the previous bet.

Raise: To make a wager that is higher than the previous bet. A maximum of 3 raises may be placed in each betting round.

Check: Choosing not to place a wager, but to remain active in the current hand. A player may only check if no other player has placed a wager in the current betting round.

All In: To wager all remaining chips. When "all in" is declared, the player may only win from each player an amount that is equal to his own all in bet.

Order of Play How To Play Razz Poker

Ante is placed by all players.

Cards are Dealt clockwise to each player, starting directly left of the dealer. Each player receives 2 face down cards, followed by 1 card face up.

First Betting Round begins. The player with the highest card must bring in, placing a wager equal to half the low limit bet. He may choose to raise by wagering the full low limit bet. Betting continues clockwise where each player may call, raise or fold. All bets and raises, aside from the bring in, must be equal to the low-limit bet.

4th Card is Dealt face up.

Second Betting Round begins, starting at the player with the lowest face-up hand. Lowest possible hand at this point is A-2. Again, all bets and raises must be equal to the low limit bet, and if two players have the same lowest hand, the player closest to the dealer's left will begin.

5th Card is Dealt face up.

Third Betting Round begins in the same fashion as the second betting round except that all bets and raises must now be equal to the high limit bet amount.

6th Card is Dealt face up.

Fourth Betting Round begins in the same manner as the third betting round.

Final Card is Dealt face down. At this time, it is unlikely that all 8 players will remain in the game. However, if this does occur, there will not be enough cards remaining to deal a face down card to each player. In this case, 1 final card will be placed face up in the center of the table for all players to use.

Final Betting Round begins in the same manner as the third and fourth betting round.

The Winner is declared as each player reveals their hand. The player with the lowest hand wins the pot. The lowest possible hand is A-2-3-4-5 (remember, straights and flushes don't count as combinations.)
